We are looking for a Data Manager!

The Heidelberg Pain Consortium (www.sfb1158.de)is a group of more than 40 researchers in the Heidelberg/Mannheim region elucidating the structure-function properties of neural pathways related to pain. Our research spans a variety of scales, from molecular mechanisms to longitudinal clinical studies. With the goal of best leveraging our scientific output for maximal scientific and public impact, we are seeking a Data Manager for our second funding period (2019-2023). 

The position provides a unique viewpoint into cross-disciplinary basic and translational research encompassing diverse specializations and innovative methodologies and technologies. The successful candidate will work with scientists and clinicians across the consortium to support collaborations and streamline data sharing, archiving, and dissemination. A key task will be to liaise with experts at the University of Heidelberg’s Computing Center to adopt modern data management and standardization practices within the consortium. 

The position is full-time, available immediately, and funded until 2023.

Desired profile:


  • ○ A Diploma or Masters in a biomedical/computer science/quantitative scientific field; neuroscience/bioinformatics/imaging background is highly desirable but not required.
  • ○ Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork, and time management skills
  • ○ Demonstrated interest in scientific research, “big data”, and open science initiatives
  • ○ Knowledge in the area of research data management (processing, administration, and publication of research data).
  • ○ Enthusiasm for learning scientific and data curation standards across disciplines (e.g. molecular biology, systems neuroscience, imaging in humans).
  • ○ Enthusiasm for learning new and emerging tools and technologies related to data management.
  • ○ Programming skills / Linux familiarity / database familiarity/ cloud-based computing familiarity are desirable but will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • ○ Excellent spoken and written English and German
