About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is the fifth largest city of the German state Baden-Württemberg. With 140,000 inhabitants, it is located on the bank of the river “Neckar” in a beautiful valley. Heidelberg is bordered by the mountains Königstuhl and Gaisberg and is a popular tourist destination. Every year approximately 3.5 million people visit Heidelberg with its rich heritage of old castle and old town. Heidelberg is also a well renowned centre for education and is known for its institutions and higher education.

Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg was established in the year 1386 and is one of the oldest European Universities. In fact, Heidelberg University is the oldest university of modern Germany. Numerous institutions like the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), four Max Planck Institutes (MPI) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) are also located in Heidelberg.

Heidelberg marked its contribution in the economic world of modern Germany. World famous enterprises like HeidelbergCement, SAP, ABB, MLP, SAS Institute and Springer Science are located in Heidelberg.
